Healthwatch Torbay are working with the Bay’s health trust to find out how their self-help video library benefits residents and whether any improvements can be made.

Health and Care Videos is a partnership with Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust. They have worked with Torbay Council, hospitals, GP surgeries, pharmacies and both the paid and unpaid carer sector to produce libraries of educational health and care videos and helpful resources, such as the following topical film on the flu vaccination:

Healthwatch Torbay Chair Dr Kevin Dixon says:

“There are Torbay residents – particularly carers – that have told us they have had difficulty accessing the health information they need. The online video libraries were set up in Torbay to hopefully make this easier. We are looking to find out what residents really think of this initiative, whether it made a difference to them and also whether they would like to see any changes made.

We are here to give people a voice and ensure that it is listened to by those who make the key decisions about services locally. Getting involved and telling us what they really feel will help shape future services. So, please visit the video library and then take part in our short online survey. It really could make a difference.”

You can browse through one of the video libraries via www.healthwatchvideos.healthandcarevideos.com.

It contains over 200 health and care videos, produced with, and written by clinicians, as well as links to national charities, advice networks and local support groups.

All responses to the Healthwatch survey – available via www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/HCVideos – will be anonymous and the information provided will be used to inform the final report at the end of the consultation. The report and all feedback gathered will be shared with commissioners and the Health and Care Videos team, in order to find out which resources are most useful to you and where potential improvements or additions could be made.

If you would like to speak to Healthwatch Torbay or need help completing the questionnaire, call the office, Monday – Thursday, 9.30am – 2.30pm, on the Freephone number 08000 520 029.

Apart from five years studying in Oxford I’ve lived most of my life in London where for many years I was Head of English in a prestigious girls’ school, but since taking early retirement and heading West to be nearer to my two daughters - settling in Torbay with my wife, Anna, in 2011 - I’ve worked in the voluntary sector. I took on the role of Service Provider, for example, promoting the Red Cross Torbay Navigators Project, while now I’m a Trustee and part of the Media Team for our local Healthwatch. I’m a governor at Torquay Academy, too, giving me the chance to stay up to date with what’s happening in the world of education. Other interests, aside from friends and family, include art and art history, reading - from contemporary fiction and poetry to Elizabethan/Jacobean literature - history, politics, cooking, walking, and music, in particular Bob Dylan, the blues, and early Elvis. I love writing, too, with one novel published so far – Elvis in Wonderland – and another, Who’s There?, that still needs plenty of work!
