Fearless Specsavers staff braved the waves to raise much-needed funds for Rowcroft Hospice and Cancer Research UK.

Employees at the Torquay and Willows stores have experienced first-hand the effects of cancer, having lost colleagues to the disease.

So they thought nothing of charging down the sands at Torquay seafront and taking an early-morning plunge to raise money for technological advancement in treatments and for the Torquay-based hospice, which cares for those with a terminal illness.

Simon Simmonds, the stores’ ophthalmic director, says: ‘This is something that’s very close to our hearts, so we are highly motivated to do as much as we can to raise money for these really important causes.

‘The Run into the Sea is something we do each year. Throwing ourselves into the water first thing in the morning is always a shock to the system, but we all have a lot of fun.

‘Our staff have been so brilliant. They’ve really embraced every fundraising challenge we’ve come up with. They’ve been amazing.’

In recent years the stores have so far raised more than £15,000, and staff have many more cash-collecting events lined up.

This week the stores are having cake bake-offs, fancy dress, glasses MOT donations, bands playing music and raffles, with customers having the chance to win a pair of designer glasses, among other things.

On 23 June, some sponsored staff will be competing in the Torbay Half Marathon, and on 4 August Simon will be taking part in the 100-mile Ride London 100, finishing outside Buckingham Palace.

Simon adds: ‘It’s been said a lot, but that’s because it’s true – everyone knows someone who’s been affected by cancer. I’d urge everyone to please come along and see us this week, and help us raise funds.

‘We have a lot of fun activities planned and are also planning a fantastic raffle, with the opportunity of winning a pair of our latest designer glasses for just £5.’

The Torquay store is at 79-81 Union Street, while the Willows store is situated behind the check-outs at Sainsbury’s. Alternatively, call 01803 213833.
