Torbay Council is considering proposals to strengthen the long-term sustainability of Cockington Court, ensuring the future of this valued heritage, visitor and business destination.
As part of an ongoing review of operations at Cockington Court, it has been concluded that the current operating model could be strengthened to improve its effectiveness and long-term sustainability.
The council is therefore exploring options for the future management of the site, with the aim of enhancing the experience for tenants and visitors while supporting its long-term viability.
Under the proposals, the council will retain responsibility for the tenanted estate while options are explored for a longer-term operating arrangement. This will include testing the market for a suitable partner with the expertise and capacity to manage and develop the site.
No preferred partner has been identified, and the council will retain ownership of Cockington Court.
The use of Cockington Court as the primary council venue for wedding and other ceremonies in Torbay will continue unchanged.
Under current proposals public access to the Court would be restricted, however the café is expected to remain open to the public. Visitors will also still be able to explore the artists’ and makers’ studios at Cockington Court, which remain open as usual.
Apple Day, which is one of Cockington Court’s most popular autumnal events, will continue as planned on Sunday 11 October. The council will also continue to invest in promoting Cockington as a key visitor destination and explore opportunities for additional events and activities that enhance the visitor experience.
The council is working closely with tenants and other stakeholders as proposals develop and positive discussions about the future of the site are already underway.
The council recognises the importance of Cockington Court to the local community and is committed to ensuring appropriate arrangements are in place before any operational changes are implemented. More information about this will be shared as it becomes available.
Councillor Chris Lewis, Deputy Leader of Torbay Council and Cabinet Member for Place Development and Economic Growth, said: “We understand the importance of places like Cockington Court to our communities and want to ensure that it is able to reach its full potential as well as remain protected for residents and visitors to enjoy both now and in the future.
“Our aim with these proposals is to create a stronger foundation for the future Cockington Court, supporting local businesses, enhancing the visitor experience and maintaining the site’s role as one of Torbay’s most important heritage destinations.
“We’re committed to working closely with tenants and key stakeholders through the various stages of the process and myself, the Leader of the Council and Senior Council Officers have already had a constructive meeting with businesses at the Court to exchange views on the way forward. By continuing this collaborative approach, I am confident we can secure a positive, sustainable future for this much-loved site.”
