Child attacked by dog outside of shop in Barton, Torquay.

A 5 year old girl was attacked by a dog yesterday afternoon in Barton, Torquay.

Olivia Schofield was with her mother and sister when they went to the shop after school. Olivia’s mother, Loretta Slavin tells us:

“As we approached the shop an elderly man was outside with his dog. Olivia spoke to the man directly, asking if his elderly black labrador was friendly as she as always been taught to do and was told he was, but wasn’t good with other dogs. So, with his permission she stroked the dog, meanwhile my springer spaniel is out of the labradors way (with my other daughter while me and olivia went in the shop) As we left the shop Olivia went to stroke the dog again, which is when he attacked – holding her hands in his mouth for 3 seconds. A young man who works in Tescos came to Olivia’s aid and did a great job doing first aid whilst he was on phone to paramedics and police.”

Olivia had a puncture wound between her fingers and also suffered scratching and bruising to the rest of her hand, she was taken to hospital where her hand was cleaned and she was given antibiotics.

The owner now has a written agreement never to never leave his dog unattended and must always wear a muzzle.

Loretta wants to highlight the danger of approaching unknown dogs, even if the owner states it is friendly and has stated that Olivia will be more aware of dogs in future.

She also says a ‘big thank you’ to Dan for his help as she went into a panic during the incident.

We wish Olivia a speedy recovery and well done Dan!
