Residents in Dawlish are being advised that essential cliff stabilisation works will begin behind Great Cliff on Marine Parade from Monday 2 March 2026.
The project, led by Teignbridge District Council, will focus on strengthening the cliff face to the rear of Great Cliff, Marine Parade, improving long-term safety for residents, visitors and those using the parking area below.
Improving Safety After Previous Cliff Falls
The works follow earlier safety measures, including the infilling of a redundant tunnel after previous cliff falls within the parking area. The new phase of the project aims to further improve the structural condition of the cliff and reduce the risk of future rockfalls.
Specialist contractors Vertical Technology Ltd have been appointed to carry out the programme. From the week beginning 2 March, the team will establish site working areas and remove vegetation from the cliff face.
Installation of rock anchors and protective mesh netting is scheduled to begin during the week commencing 9 March.
What Residents Can Expect
The project is expected to last up to five weeks, with working hours between 8:30am and 5:30pm each day.
While some disruption is inevitable, the council says every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience. Noise levels, site equipment and welfare arrangements will be carefully managed throughout.
For safety reasons, the car parking spaces directly beneath the cliff will be closed for the duration of the works. However, access and exit routes, as well as access to bin stores, will remain open at all times.
Alternative Parking Arrangements
To support residents affected by the temporary closure, permits will be provided free of charge for use at Barton Hill Car Park for the duration of the works.
Residents have already been contacted directly with further details about the project and instructions on how to obtain their permits.
The stabilisation scheme represents an important step in safeguarding properties, public spaces and parking facilities along Dawlish’s seafront, helping to ensure the area remains safe and accessible for the community.
