Cyclist taken airlifted to hospital and A38 closed after serious collision

Update: The A38 has reopened by there are still delays and congestion in the area.

The A38 (Eastbound)is currently closed following a collision this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a collision between a lorry and a pedal cyclist on the A38 Exeter bound carriageway near Smithleigh, approximately one mile from Lee Mill.

The cyclist was treated at the scene before being conveyed by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital with serious injuries.

The A38, Exeter bound remains closed whilst investigations into the incident are carried out by officers from the Serious Collisions investigation Unit.

Traffic in the area and on surrounding minor roads is very heavy and motorists are advised to avoid the area if at all possible.

The Lorry driver, a man, aged in his early 40’s was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and remains in custody at Charles Cross police Station.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to contact them on 101 quoting police reference 0252 05914.
