Young people across Devon are gaining vital skills, confidence and real-world experience thanks to the Chiefs Engage 16+ Programme. Devon Contract Waste (DCW), working alongside the Exeter Chiefs, has been supporting the five-week Chiefs Engage 16+ Programme, which is designed for 16–18-year-olds who are currently not in education or employment. The programme helps young people rebuild confidence and develop the practical employability skills they need to re-enter the world of work.
The initiative focuses on hands-on learning and real workplace insight. Throughout the five-week programme, the young participants took part in a range of activities supported by DCW, including: CV writing workshops, pay and budgeting sessions, site visits, and practical training. They also benefitted from mock interviews with DCW’s local site managers, offering them realistic interview experience and constructive feedback to help prepare for future job applications.
All students completed a manual handling certificate during the programme, providing them with an important and well recognised qualification that can support their next steps into employment across a range of industries. The young people received their certificates from Exeter Chiefs player Christ Tshiunza, who is sponsored by DCW, marking a proud moment at the end of the programme.

By combining support, structure and real-world experience, we help participants take practical steps back towards education, training or employment — and working with local employers like DCW are essential to making that happen.
