A much-loved seasonal event in South Hams is set to return this April, as Deer Wood opens its gates for a special Bluebell Open Weekend on 25th–26th April. This year’s theme, “Doorways,” invites visitors to step into a woodland transformed by spring, where sunlight filters through the canopy and illuminates a breathtaking carpet of bluebells.

Nestled near Loddiswell, the conservation woodland offers a rare opportunity to experience one of nature’s most enchanting displays. The fleeting bluebell season draws walkers, families, and nature lovers alike, all eager to witness the vivid purples and blues that blanket the forest floor.

Alongside the scenic walks, the weekend will feature a range of creative, family-friendly activities designed to deepen the connection between visitors and the natural surroundings. Highlights include the chance to help co-create a Community Land Art installation winding around the Outdoor Circular Shelter, as well as hands-on workshops such as fairy door painting—where participants can contribute to a growing Fairy Village—and relaxed, expressive sessions in tea-bag art and neuro art at the Outdoor Kitchen.

Due to the popularity of the event, parking operates on a pre-booked time slot system. Available afternoon sessions currently include:

* 12:00 – 1:30

* 1:30 – 2:50

* 3:00 – 4:30

* 4:40 – 5:50

Morning sessions are already fully booked, and only a limited number of fairy door painting spaces remain.

Visitors who prefer a longer countryside walk can make use of an overflow car park located near the top of the lane, just past the Loddiswell Business Park entrance. From there, a scenic two-thirds of a mile walk leads down to Deer Wood, with no time restrictions on parking.

Clear signposting will be in place across the weekend to help guide visitors to the site.

To protect the delicate ecosystem and wildlife within this conservation woodland, dogs are not permitted.

With its blend of natural beauty and creative exploration, the Deer Wood Bluebell Open Weekend promises a memorable spring outing, offering a unique “doorway” into both art and nature at their most inspiring.
