To mark National Eye Examination Month, Newmedica Plymouth consultant ophthalmologist Nick Edmeadeshas described optometrists across the county as the‘GPs of the eyes’ because of the vital role they play in monitoring overall visual health and detecting early signs of serious eye conditions that can lead to blindness if not treated promptly.

Nick said: ‘There are many eye conditions that, while highly treatable when caught early, can cause rapid deterioration of sight if left untreated, and in some cases even irreversible sight loss.

‘We all know we need to visit our GP when we need a checkup or are experiencing health issues, but too many people forget about their eyesight.

‘Even if your vision seems fine, it’s important to haveregular eye exams at your local opticians at least every two years, as optometrists can uncover the early signs of common eye conditions that may not present detectable symptoms to the patient until much later, and the earlier the intervention, the better chance of maintaining good vision.

‘If an optician picks up something that needs further investigation or treatment, they will refer on to an ophthalmologist.

‘The vital work of our local opticians’ practices ensures that we’re able to implement NHS-funded and private treatment plans for hundreds of patients across Devonevery year.

‘It’s not just eye conditions that opticians can detect –our eyes are often an indicator of our overall health and eye exams can help identify other health issues including diabetes and high blood pressure.

‘It’s the only place in the body where blood vessels, nerves and tissue can be seen without surgery.’

The Newmedica Plymouth is an eye health clinic and surgical centre catering for specialist eye services inDevon and Cornwall, including Totnes, Ivybridge,Plymouth, Saltash, Tavistock, Liskeard, Callington, Launceston and surrounding areas.

Nick added: ‘Too many local people experience what they think are mild eyesight problems and put off an all-important eye exam, making adjustments to their routines rather than make an appointment.

‘I would encourage everyone, whether experiencing symptoms or not, to ensure they are visiting an opticiansat least every two years, or more frequently if advised to by them, because they can spot early warning signs and refer you to a treatment specialist such as ourselves if a condition is detected.

‘Our optometrist colleagues are a vital part of the patient journey towards maintaining healthy eyes. As the GPs of the eyes, they are often the first point of care for a patient and the first step towards any diagnosis or treatment.

‘The vast majority of our patients are referred to us by external optometrists in the community who identify conditions requiring further treatment. We appreciate their hard work and support in ensuring patients are seen in the most appropriate setting.’

There are steps people can take to help look after their eye health and minimise the risk of developing certain conditions.

Nick continued: ‘Though some eye conditions, such as macular degeneration, are genetic, it’s important to note that lifestyle changes can reduce your risk of developing many conditions.

‘The most obvious is cigarette smoking, which can increase risk for a wide range of eye conditions, but it’s also important to maintain a healthy diet and wear sunglasses when needed to keep eyes protected.’

Newmedica Plymouth is led by Mr Nick Edmeades, Mr Tom Cudrnak and Mr Vasant Raman, alongside operations director Amanda Champion.
