Parents and carers across Devon are being encouraged to have open conversations with young people ahead of festivals, outdoor events and other summer activities.
Devon County Council’s Public Health team has launched a new online resource designed to help young people stay safe while enjoying the summer months.
The guidance provides practical advice on a range of topics that families may wish to discuss before young people attend events. These include travel arrangements, staying in touch with family and friends, looking after others, wellbeing, relationships, alcohol and drugs, hot weather, water safety and what to do if plans change unexpectedly.
The online resourcealso offers tips for parents and carers on how to start conversations, plan ahead and support young people both before and after events. It includes links to trusted sources of information and further support.
Councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “Summer festivals, outdoor gatherings and other events can be exciting experiences for young people, helping them build independence and make lasting memories with friends.
“Having a simple, open conversation before they go can make a real difference. Parents and carers do not need to have all the answers. What matters most is keeping communication open so that young people feel able to ask for help, make informed decisions and know someone is there to support them.
“We want young people across Devon to have a safe and enjoyable summer, and our new online resource offers helpful guidance to support families as they prepare.”
The guidance has been developed with popular events in mind, including festivals attended by many young people from Devon such as Boardmasters, Beautiful Days and Tunes Festival, although the advice is relevant for any festival, outdoor event or summer gathering.
