The fire service was called out to reports of fire along a railway line this afternoon.

There were 3 seperate embankment fires today along a stretch of railway used by a scenic steam train near Paignton.

7 fire appliances, from Brixham, Buckfastleigh, Bovey Tracey, Paignton and Torquay, were mobilised following numerous calls from members of the public and railway staff.

Large areas of gorse and bramles were involved and crews used high pressure fogging units, hose reel jets, water back packs and beaters to extinguish all 3 fires.

Damage was confined to the embankment only and was caused by sparks/embers from the steam engine.
