England’s recycling crisis: Which councils are falling short?

Fresh research has revealed the England areas recycling the least, with Exeter placing tenth.

The study conducted by Enviro Homes Renewables analysed the most recent data from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, revealing the percentage of waste recycled, reused, or composted by each council.

It was found that the London borough of Tower Hamlets recycles the least of any area in England. Just 17.7% of all waste collected was sent for reuse, recycling, or composting in the 2022-23 period, with around 284.1 kilograms of waste collected per person.

Liverpool City Council comes in at a close second place on the list, where just 17.9% of all household waste was sent for reuse, recycling, and composting in the time studied. Additionally, 369.6 kilograms of household waste was collected per person.

Another area in the North West comes in third: Barrow-in-Furness. According to the council data, just 18% of all household waste was recycled in the time studied, with around 345.5 kilograms of household waste collected per person.

Wandsworth, another London borough, takes fourth place on the list, with just 22.4% of the area’s household waste going into recycling and 285.5 kilograms of household waste collected per person.

Rounding out the top five is Birmingham City Council, with only 22.9% of household waste going into recycling and around 336.7 kilograms of it collected per person.

Commenting on the findings, Ross Jones, Director Of Enviro Homes Renewables, said: “While many councils are doing their bit to ensure waste is kept to a minimum, it’s clear from this data that some councils also need to do more, especially with the selection of large cities and highly populated London boroughs that appear on the list as well. There are ways individuals can minimise their household waste by a lot, but it’s a group effort at the end of the day to ensure that this makes a difference.”
