Festive hamper project returns to bring cheer to young people in care across Devon

As the festive season approaches, Open Up, the official charity of Devon Partnership NHS Trust, is preparing its much-loved Christmas Hamper Project and is calling on people across the county to get involved.

Run in partnership with Children and Family Health Devon (CFHD), the project brings comfort, connection and festive cheer to young people in care and care leavers across Devon and Torbay.

From 100 hampers in 2020 to 250 in 2024, the project’s growth reflects the incredible compassion and commitment of Devon’s community.

Now in its sixth year, the project has brought together local schools, small businesses and community groups who donate items, fundraise and volunteer their time to help young people who might otherwise spend Christmas alone.

Each hamper is thoughtfully filled with items chosen to bring warmth and joy, including woolly hats, blankets, water bottles, toiletries, mugs, hot chocolate, holdall bags, advent calendars, and more.

Young people have shared how meaningful the hampers are, helping them feel remembered and valued at a time that can be difficult.

“The project is about showing young people they are held in mind and supported,” says Jade Simmons, CFHD Clinical Team Manager for Children in Care and Care Experienced Adults.

“A hamper might seem small, but it can make a huge difference—bringing joy, comfort and a sense of belonging at a time that can be especially tough.”

As Open Up plan for Christmas 2025, their goal is to reach even more young people and care leavers across Devon and Torbay.
