Free cycle confidence workshops help more people discover the joy of cycling

Free cycle confidence workshops are coming to Torbay this summer and autumn, helping people of all ages and abilities build confidence, enjoy family cycling and discover how an e-bike could transform everyday journeys.

Local Charity, Safe, Sustainable Travel Torbay (SSTT) is offering a series of free, friendly sessions thanks to funding from Torbay on the Move and Cycling UK. The workshops are designed for anyone who would like to feel more confident riding a bike, return to cycling after a break, or try an electric bike

Upcoming sessions include:

  • People’s Parkfield, Paignton 12th, 20th and 27th August
  • The Acorn Centre Birthday Celebration – Saturday 15 August
  • Torbay Hospital – Friday 11th and Tuesday 15th September
  • South Devon College – Friday 25th September and Tuesday 2nd October

The sessions provide a relaxed and supportive environment where participants can improve their skills, learn practical tips for riding on today’s roads and traffic-free routes, and experience the boost in confidence that cycling can bring.

Electric bikes are available to try, giving people the chance to see how they can make hills easier, longer journeys more enjoyable and everyday trips such as commuting, shopping or visiting friends much more accessible. Cycling can help people become more active, improve wellbeing, reduce transport costs and cut carbon emissions. Cycling UK’s community programmes have shown that friendly, local confidence sessions help many adults gain the skills and confidence to cycle more often.

The workshops are also ideal for families. Young people aged 14 to 16 are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Children who are already confident riding in a traffic-free environment are welcome to attend on their own bikes, making the sessions a great opportunity for families to build confidence together and enjoy cycling as part of everyday life.

Alongside the workshops, SSTT is promoting an affordable e-bike rental scheme, giving people the opportunity to borrow a bike for longer and discover whether cycling could replace some of their regular car journeys before committing to buying one.

Beth Huntley, Chair of Safe, Sustainable Travel Torbay, said:

“Many people haven’t ridden a bike for years, or worry that Torbay’s hills make cycling impossible. That’s where e-bikes can be life-changing. They’re fun, accessible and open up opportunities for people who never thought cycling was for them. Whether you’re thinking about cycling to work, making the school run, improving your fitness or simply enjoying time outdoors with your family, we’d love to help you get started.”

With Cycle to Work Day encouraging more people to consider travelling by bike, the workshops come at the perfect time for anyone wondering whether cycling could make commuting quicker, healthier, more enjoyable and cheaper.

Places are free but must be booked in advance.
