Residents across Torbay are being encouraged to get back on two wheels this summer with a series of free cycle confidence sessions and e-bike experiences organised by local charity Safe, Sustainable Travel Torbay (SSTT) as part of the national Big Bike Revival programme.

Whether you’ve never learned to ride, haven’t cycled for years, or are curious about trying an electric bike, SSTT’s qualified instructors will provide friendly, tailored support to help people cycle safely and with confidence.

Amanda, who attended one of the charity’s e-bike confidence sessions last year, said:

“I used to be really worried about cycling on the roads, but now I cycle all over the Bay, including to work. I love being able to leave my car at home.”

Free Big Bike Revival Cycle Confidence sessions will take place at People’s Parkfield in Paignton on 21 and 24 July, with further sessions planned at Torbay Hospital and South Devon College in September.

The charity has also been running free bike repair sessions this summer to help keep more people riding. During a recent event at Cantina in Young’s Park, the team welcomed Sir Ed Davey, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, who stopped by to see the charity’s work in action.

Sir Ed spoke about enjoying cycling with his wife and child using adapted cycles and praised SSTT’s work to help more people experience the joy and freedom that cycling can bring. He wished the charity every success in encouraging more people to travel actively and enjoy Torbay’s beautiful surroundings.

Local MP Steve Darling also visited the session. A vocal supporter of active travel and inclusive transport, Steve has joined several of SSTT’s community rides on a tandem bicycle and has championed the charity’s work to improve transport options for people of all ages and abilities.

SSTT will once again host ‘Kidical Mass’, a free family bike ride during Children’s Week in Paignton, offering families the chance to enjoy a relaxed ride together in a fun and supportive environment.

Beth Huntley, Chair of Safe, Sustainable Travel Torbay, said:

“Cycling is a fantastic way to improve your health, save money, reduce congestion and enjoy everything Torbay has to offer. Whether you’re eight or eighty, we’d love to help you discover the confidence and freedom that getting on a bike or e-bike can bring.”
