Community groups and organisations working to prevent suicide and support people’s mental health in Torbay can now apply for grants of up to £1,000.
The Baton of Hope Legacy Fund has opened for applications exactly one year after 100 baton bearers walked across Torbay as part of the national Baton of Hope suicide prevention initiative.
More than £9,000 was raised through sponsorship of the baton bearers and the Big Show of Hope fundraising event, which was held at the Riviera Centre on the same day.
The new fund aims to build on the legacy of the event by supporting grassroots projects working to improve mental health, tackle isolation and help prevent suicide in communities across Torbay.
What projects could receive funding?
Grants of up to £1,000 are available, with projects that could receive support including:
- Community-based peer support groups
- Projects tackling loneliness and social isolation
- Activities increasing community connection and a sense of belonging
- Support for people affected by trauma or adverse childhood experiences
- Gender-based wellbeing and community connection initiatives
- Outreach and engagement with underserved communities
- Awareness, resilience and wellbeing activities
- Small pilot projects with the potential to grow or continue beyond the funding period
Applications for projects which match the priorities of the One Devon Suicide Prevention Strategic Plan will receive a higher score during the application process.
‘The Baton of Hope really did bring hope to the Bay’
Councillor Hayley Tranter, Torbay Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult and Community Services, Public Health and Inequalities, said: “The Baton of Hope really did bring hope to the Bay last September and showed what could be achieved when communities pull together.
“It’s vital that we do not lose that momentum and I’m pleased the fund is now accepting applications.
“The intention was always for grassroots organisations to benefit from the money raised so I hope community groups, registered charities and social enterprises consider submitting bids. They are at the forefront of local work to lead the fight for positive mental health and suicide awareness and prevention.”
How to apply
Torbay Communities is overseeing the Baton of Hope Legacy Fund.
Groups interested in applying can find further information through the Torbay Communities website.
The deadline for applications is Wednesday 11 November 2026.
All projects receiving funding must be completed by 30 September 2027.
Anniversary walk taking place tonight
The launch coincides with a Baton of Hope anniversary walk and reflection service taking place this evening, Wednesday 30 September.
Those wishing to take part should meet at Corbyn Head at 6pm, with the walk beginning at 6.15pm.
Participants will walk to St Paul’s Church in Preston, where a reflection service will take place at 7pm.
