As people head to the South West for their summer holidays, South West Water is urging visitors to do their bit in protecting the region’s precious water resources by using water wisely during their stay.
South West Water serves around 10 million customers in the summer, placing additional demand on water supplies during one of the busiest times of year.
With temporary hosepipe restrictions now in place across the region following prolonged dry weather, below-average rainfall and exceptional levels of increased demand during the summer months, using water wisely has never been more important.
While customers work hard throughout the year to use water efficiently, South West Water is also encouraging visitors to make every drop count while enjoying everything the region has to offer.
Dani Twelvetree, Director of Customer Communications and Engagement at South West Water, said: “We know people come to the South West to enjoy our incredible beaches, countryside and communities, and we want everyone to have a fantastic stay. But with that enjoyment comes a shared responsibility.
“Climate change is making our weather less predictable. We’ve already seen five heatwaves this year and this increases demand for water. It’s really important we make sure there’s a reliable supply of drinking water for everyone in the region throughout the year.
“Our customers are making a real effort to use water wisely, and we’re asking visitors to do the same. By making a few small changes during their holiday, everyone can help protect the water resources that keep the South West thriving – for local people, businesses and future visitors alike.”
To support the increase in visitors, who are vital to the region’s economy throughout the year, South West Water is sharing simple water-saving tips with holidaymakers through its Thank you for using less water campaign, encouraging small changes that can make a big difference during the busy summer season.
Throughout the summer, visitors will see water-saving messages at key locations across the region, encouraging them to take simple steps to reduce unnecessary water use.
Here’s some top tips for holidaymakers this summer:
-Brush dry sand off your feet with a towel rather than rinsing them under a tap.
-Give swimwear a quick rinse and reuse it rather than washing it after every use.
-Report dripping taps and leaking toilets to your accommodation provider.
-Reuse towels where possible by hanging them up to dry between uses.
-Request less frequent bedding changes during longer stays.
-Keep a jug of tap water in the fridge rather than running the tap for cold water.
-Take four-minute showers instead of longer showers or baths.
-Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.
