Inspirational film about a Devon woman amongst new films at the library

Libraries Unlimited is bringing back its popular Films at the Library programme this spring, transforming libraries across Devon and Torbay into welcoming, community cinemas from February to March 2026.

A standout event this spring is Jo in the Water, a compelling documentary made in Devon about a local sea swimmer turned reluctant activist, taking on one of the UK’s biggest water companies in a battle to protect our waters from sewage pollution.

Featuring Jo Bateman, Jeremy Vine, Jim Murray MBE and Chris Packham. This preview screening marks the film’s first public showing since the premiere and ahead of its wider tour, offering audiences a rare opportunity to see the film early in an intimate, community setting. The screenings in Barnstaple and Seaton will feature post-film Q&A sessions, offering audiences the chance to hear directly from director Pip Piper in Barnstaple and Jo Bateman in Seaton.

Chris Packham, Wildlife TV presenter and conservationist commented: “Jo inspires people… they realise that together we have a greater strength. In a shoal like this we become mighty.”

The 2026 spring programme puts storytelling front and centre, with a mix of family favourites, powerful documentaries and acclaimed dramas. Highlights include dramas like I Swear and Four Mothers, alongside independent titles that explore social justice, identity and environmental activism, including Jo in the Water and Swan Song and family-friendly adventures like Dog Man. The programme also features The Ballad of Wallis Island, a British independent film that has received multiple awards and nominations on the festival and awards circuit.

I Swear has received five BAFTA nominations at the 2026 British Academy Film Awards, including Best Actor for Robert Aramayo and Best Supporting Actor for Peter Mullan, plus nominations in Original Screenplay and Casting categories, spotlighting its critical acclaim this awards season.

Each title has been selected to spark conversation as well as enjoyment. All screenings are accessible with captions.

The Films at the Library programme is funded by Arts Council England, helping libraries keep ticket prices low. Tickets cost just £3 for library members and £5 for non-members*, and it’s free and easy to join the library online or in person.

Rae Hoole, Creative Communities Producer at Libraries Unlimited said: “Films at the Library is about more than watching a film – it’s about creating opportunities for shared experiences in places people already feel comfortable. This spring’s programme includes powerful local stories, thoughtful independent cinema and family-friendly fun for all at an accessible price.”

Libraries taking part this season include Exmouth, Colyton, Seaton, Barnstaple, Cullompton, Newton Abbot, St Thomas and Brixham.

Exmouth kicks off the season with a double-bill as part of its Exmouth Pride partnership, showcasing But I’m a Cheerleader followed by Swan Song on Friday 6 February.
