Three of Ivybridge’s car parks will undergo improvement works throughout July as part of a wider programme of investment by South Hams District Council.
The works will take place at Leonards Road, Glanvilles Mill and Harford Road car parks, with the council scheduling the improvements in phases to help keep parking available while the work is carried out.
Among the biggest changes is the complete resurfacing of Leonards Road Car Park, where four additional disabled parking bays will be created alongside four dedicated bays for minibuses used by the Ivybridge and District Community Transport Association and Devon County Council.
Harford Road Car Park will also be fully resurfaced, with a new disabled parking bay added as part of the improvements.
Meanwhile, at Glanvilles Mill Car Park, parking bays will be repainted, taxi bays will be realigned and the existing drop-off area will be transformed into a permanent space for pop-up market stalls closer to the bridge.
The market improvements are being funded through £73,000 of external funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and the Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF).
New pay-and-display machines will also be installed at all three car parks.
Work timetable
Harford Road Car Park will be closed for resurfacing on 6 and 7 July.
Works at Leonards Road will run from 8 to 17 July. The car park will remain partially open during this period, with up to half of the available spaces closed while work is carried out.
Glanvilles Mill Car Park will remain open throughout the improvement programme but will also serve as the contractor’s work compound.
Relining works across all three car parks are scheduled to take place between 20 and 29 July, with the council expecting only minimal disruption. Drivers are advised there may be occasional short-term disruption outside the advertised dates while specific elements of the project are completed.
Permit holders who normally use Leonards Road Car Park will be able to use the district council’s other Ivybridge car parks while the resurfacing work is underway.
Councillor Victor Abbott, South Hams District Council’s Executive Member for Community Services, Operations and Leisure, said the improvements form part of a wider programme to modernise public facilities across the district.
He said: “These works are the latest step in our wider project to refurbish and modernise some of our assets across the district, including our public toilets, bins, benches and car parks.
“We are investing in our car parks to ensure they are in good condition for our residents and visitors.
“The council is fully committed to support our communities in every way we can, and these sorts of works may appear small in isolation, but when looking across the whole district, they can make a big difference.”
The programme of works is expected to be completed by 29 July.
