Tubers Active set to launch this September at the academy’s Torquay, Taunton, and Barnsley locations, will combine gaming technology with physical exercise to help increase student wellbeing, confidence and focus.
The inspiration came when staff recognised their students who all have a passion for
gaming, needed physical outlets and emotional regulation support that worked with their interests. With 70% of parents concerned that digital distractions are leading to their child being less active (Youth Sports Trust, 2024) Nick Ellison, Tubers Founder, believed there would be a better way to approach it.

“We realised that whilst our students were becoming incredibly skilled with technology, they needed physical activity approaches designed specifically for young people who think differently. Tubers Active uses the gaming elements they love to support their overall wellbeing and development.”
Each fitness suite features Blaze Pods – reactive light-up targets used by professional athletes – creating game-like fitness experiences that improve reaction times and coordination. Ring Fit systems connected to large screens gamify physical activity with individual progress tracking, alongside yoga mats, chin-up bars and adaptable equipment for all abilities.
“This isn’t just about getting children moving – it’s about creating in them a love for exercise and a way to regulate their emotions.” explained Ellison. “Some students need high-energy outlets, others need gentle movement that builds confidence. This gives them choice and control.”
In an exciting development, Tubers has partnered with Britt Carter, The Apprentice finalist and OOMPH Energy Drinks founder, to create bespoke exercise programmes launching later this year. These feature motion-captured exercises with animated characters, further gamifying fitness.
The fitness suites will be free for all students at the alternative provision academy, which specialises in supporting children aged 7-17 who struggle in mainstream education due to complex needs including neurodiversity and behavioural challenges.
