South Hams District Council has announced a significant investment in public toilet facilities across Totnes, reaffirming its commitment to improving essential community services.

Starting this week, the public toilets on Coronation Road will undergo a full refurbishment. Work is expected to be completed by Tuesday 23 December, giving residents and visitors newly improved facilities in time for the New Year.

The improvements continue into 2026. From 12 January, refurbishment will begin at the Steamer Quay Car Park toilets, with work scheduled to last for around four weeks.

Meanwhile, the toilets located under the Civic Hall will undergo the most extensive upgrade, with improvements planned between 19 January and 31 March. Due to their layout and location, these facilities will need to close completely during the works.

Cllr Julian Brazil, Executive Member for Community Services, Operations and Leisure, highlighted the importance of these upgrades: “The works will modernise Totnes’ public toilets as part of a wider project across our communities in the South Hams to modernise some of our local assets.

“You may see freshened-up toilets, benches and other assets of ours in the coming months – these are part of our commitment to support our communities in every way we can.”

Access During the Works

Coronation Road and Steamer Quay: The accessible toilets will remain open while refurbishment takes place, helping ensure continuity for those who need it most.
Civic Hall: A complete closure will be necessary during the refurbishment due to the building’s layout.

These investments form part of a broader programme to enhance public spaces and facilities across the South Hams, improving everyday amenities for residents and supporting the town’s vibrant visitor economy.
