Man dies after being rescued from Kingsbridge Estuary

Police were called following reports that a man in a wheel chair had entered Kingsbridge Estuary from The Promenade shortly after 10pm on Monday 7 April 2014.

Officers entered the estuary and pulled the 73-year-old local man from the water, before commencing CPR.

Paramedics from the ambulance service and members of HM Coastguard and Devon Fire and Rescue Service also attended, assisting with emergency treatment and scene preservation.

The man was airlifted to Derriford hospital by police helicopter where, despite all efforts, he was pronounced dead. His next of kin has been informed.

Witnesses have been spoken to and the circumstances are not thought to be suspicious, although a full investigation has begun.
