A man was found dead on Dartmoor this morning (6 Aug) after going missing last night when he was separated from a walking group.
A major search and rescue operation took place in the Belstone area on North Dartmoor after the alarm was raised by other walkers when the man failed to return to their car.
Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team – Ashburton said: “We joined the search alongside North Moor and SARDA search colleagues, and a Sea King Helicopter from 22 Squadron A-Flight RAF Chivenor.
“In the early hours of this morning the gentleman was located in Halstock Woods by one of the search teams.
“We are very grateful to all the volunteers from the Okehampton and Ashburton teams who turned out to join the search and bring it to a swift conclusion. Our thoughts are with the gentleman’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
Police today confirmed that the man had been found deceased and the circumstances were not suspicious. A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “The family of the man, who was a visitor to the area and not local, have been informed of his death.”
A post-mortem is due to be carried out and a report will be filed for the coroner.
