Non-profit organisation The Lodge Action Sports Club, which is entirely volunteer led, are opening a new indoor skate park for local youths and young children in Newton Abbot. The group aim to bring more than just skating to the community, offering a variety of events such as scooter evenings, BMX evenings and set times for children aged 2-5 to encourage kids to start being active while they’re young. Schools and parties can also book the facilities of the venue and they will be offering professional tuition in one-to-one classes. They also plan to open a youth café in the autumn and hope to further expand their services by doing workshops, training and a range of other activities in the future. Their aim is to provide youngsters with a safe haven where they can enjoy themselves, find support and develop new skills. The club is already in the development stages of creating opportunities for disengaged youngsters through local schools, and hope to offer them training, peer mentoring and the ability to improve their confidence and self esteem through extreme sports. The club has already been successful in securing funding to help them achieve this goal.
A member of The Lodge Action Sports Club comittee, Nikki Taylor, stated that:
We are providing a community facility run 100% by local volunteers that care about young people and want to let them know that we believe and want to support them to develop skills and experiences through alternative sports such as skateboarding.
The grand opening event will be held on Sunday 27th July, from 10am until 3pm, people of all ages are encouraged to attend whether you are a local business looking to help out, or a member of the general public there to enjoy what the skate park has to offer. The park will be located at the former Gymnastics Centre on Wharf Road, they share the large industrial unit with the Pro Cycle Centre, who have supported The Lodge Action Sports Club since the beginning of their journey . There will be many fun-filled activities to celebrate the launch of the skate park including demos, stunts, competitions and a raffle draw to support the club. This will also be a great opportunity for anyone interested to volunteer their services for future events and activities.
Your local skate park needs you!
Although The Lodge plans to self-fund eventually, in their early days they are going to need help from the local community in order to establish themselves well. They are looking for sponsors, funders and local partners. Many people have already contributed but the club needs the help of as many people who are willing to ensure that the skate park kicks off in style and that it continues to flourish.
They are also looking to enlist volunteers for the upkeep of the skate park, such as supervisors for their evening sessions, eventually staff for the café once it is operational, and require raffle prizes for their opening day! Even if you can’t contribute, spread the word about this fantastic new addition to Newton Abbot and be sure to check them out on their grand opening.
