Both programmes are fully funded for Torbay-based businesses and residents so there is no cost to the employer or participant.  The two programmes are:

Torbay Sector Pathways

This programme focuses on businesses within Torbay’s key sectors. This includes microelectronics and photonics, hospitality, tourism, fisheries, health and care, creative and digital businesses.

Working alongside employers to identify needs and skills gaps in their workforce, the programme offers a range of courses that can help employees progress in their chosen careers and help their business to thrive. These include accredited and non-accredited masterclasses, workshops and short courses.

For example, hotel employees could take part in masterclasses in cheffing and management. Digital or creative company employees could choose from workshops in Adobe Photoshop and WordPress. Health and social care company employees could take part in adult social care courses or attend complex care workshops.

Torbay Sector Pathways has received £208,719 from Torbay’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund as well as funding from Torbay Council and the Torquay Towns Deal. The programme runs until March 2026.

Torbay Green Skills

This programme is aimed exclusively at businesses in Torbay’s construction sector, including those in self-employment. The focus of the programme is to promote the effective use of green and low carbon technologies.

South Devon College trainers will work collaboratively with employers to support the training needs of each business and their workforce. Examples of the green skills courses on offer include training in solar PV, solar thermal, air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps and EV charging.

Torbay Green Skills has received £100,000 through Torbay’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The programme runs until the end of March 2025.

Councillor Chris Lewis, Deputy Leader of Torbay Council and Cabinet Member for Place Development and Economic Growth, said: ‘‘Supporting business owners and building on Torbay’s economic specialisms are key parts of the Council’s Economic Growth Strategy.  These new programmes will help local businesses to thrive while teaching residents new skills that can help them progress in their careers. It’s a win-win for both employer and employee and it’s completely free for everyone taking part. I strongly encourage eligible business owners to get involved.”

Eligibility criteria

Businesses and participants must be based in Torbay (TQ1-TQ5). Individual participants must be aged 16 or above and should already be in work or have a genuine desire to work within one of the sector pathways.
