Ten pupils from Marine Academy Primary celebrated the second anniversary of the school’s Community Bike Hub by completing a 24km cycle ride along Drake’s Trail.
Using bikes from the school’s free Community Bike Hub, the pupils completed the challenging route as part of a celebration of the initiative, which has helped children and families access cycling through free bike and equipment loans.
The ride was supported by cycling charity Sustrans, which has worked with the school to maintain the bikes and promote the physical, mental and social benefits of cycling. The school also thanked Mr Small for helping transport the bikes to the start of the trail.
The Community Bike Hub, which launched two years ago, allows families to borrow bikes and accessories free of charge, helping more children enjoy cycling outside school while encouraging healthy, active lifestyles.
Alongside the free loan scheme, the school also organises regular community bike rides, giving children and their families the opportunity to build confidence, explore the local area and enjoy cycling together.
Part of the Ted Wragg Trust, the anniversary ride forms part of Marine Academy Primary’s wider commitment to cycling, with Year 5 pupils also taking part in Bikeability training to help them develop safe cycling skills and confidence on the road.

The ride was a wonderful way to celebrate everything our Community Bike Hub has achieved over the past two years. It has helped remove barriers to cycling, encouraged healthy, active lifestyles and created opportunities for families to enjoy being outdoors together. Thank you to Sustrans and all the staff who have supported this initiative.”
