Police say the assault took place approximately halfway between the Premier Inn and Torbay Surf Life Saving Club.

The victim, a man in his 60s, was reportedly subjected to hate-related verbal abuse before being physically assaulted by an unknown man who was riding a bicycle.

Potential witnesses sought

Officers investigating the incident believe a number of people may have witnessed what happened.

The victim reported that a group of schoolchildren accompanied by teachers were nearby at the time of the incident.

Police have also highlighted that the steam train was approaching the location when the alleged assault took place, which could help potential witnesses identify when they were in the area.

Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the assault or saw a cyclist in the area who may be connected to the incident.

Anyone with information or CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage which could assist the investigation is asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police online or call 101, quoting crime reference 50260251913.
