Police are appealing for the public’s help to identify the owner of a dinghy discovered in Firestone Bay, Plymouth.

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police were alerted shortly before 10am on Monday 23 February after HM Coastguard reported an unattended vessel.

The dinghy was found with personal items on board but no person present, it is believed that it could have been at the location since Sunday afternoon. The outboard motor was discovered submerged in the water a few metres away, and the vessel itself was not secured or positioned appropriately for mooring.

Coastguard teams carried out a search of the surrounding water but, at this stage, no person has been located.

Police enquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of the owner and to determine whether anyone may have entered the water and found themselves in difficulty, or whether the boat may have been abandoned or interfered with.

PC Jessie Rapson-Blackler said: “The dinghy was not secured and not in a suitable position for mooring. The outboard was located submerged in water a few metres away.

“Enquiries so far have been unable to identify an owner. It’s possible that somebody may have gone overboard prior to the dinghy washing up, or it may just have been abandoned there.

“Either way, we are carrying out enquiries to identify the owner or anyone with knowledge of it.”

Anyone who recognises the dinghy or has information about its ownership is urged to contact police by calling 999, quoting log 181 of 23 February.
