Police are appealing for information following two separate road traffic collisions in the South Hams which left two motorcyclists with life-threatening injuries.

Emergency services were called to single vehicle collisions involving motorcycles at Lee Mill near Ivybridge on Friday night and at Aveton Gifford near Kingsbridge on Saturday afternoon.

In both incidents young male motorcyclists sustained life-threatening injuries and were taken to Derriford Hospital where they remain in a critical condition.

Police and ambulance were called around 4.55pm on Saturday 7 June after the rider lost control of an Aprilia 125cc motorcycle on the approach to the roundabout on the A379 at Aveton Gifford.

The motorcycle slid along the road and into the roundabout, causing the male rider serious injuries. The 20-year-old from Plymouth was airlifted to Derriford Hospital.

Officers from the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit carried out a specialist forensic investigation of the scene and are appealing for any witnesses to this incident. They are also asking anyone who saw the biker travelling with two other motorcyclists prior to the collision to contact them on 101, quoting log number 647 of 07/06/14.

At 11.35pm the previous night, police and ambulance were called to North Road at Lee Mill Industrial Estate after a Kawasaki ZR550 motorcycle was in collision with a parked three-axle lorry trailer.

The bike, ridden by a 21-year-old Plymouth man, was travelling along North Road towards Central Avenue when the collision happened. The motorcyclist sustained life-threatening injuries and remains at Derriford Hospital.

The road was closed for almost five hours while officers from the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit carried out a forensic examination of the area.

They are also appealing for witnesses to this incident and the public is asked to contact them on 101, quoting log 1011 of 06/06/14.
