A 100-metre police cordon is in place in the Mutley area of Plymouth after officers discovered items requiring specialist assessment at a property in College Avenue.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that emergency services are currently at the scene while an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team carries out expert analysis.
Officers executed a warrant at the address on the morning of 17 February. A 26-year-old white British man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm without a certificate. He remains in police custody.
During searches of the property, further items were located that require specialist review, prompting the attendance of the EOD team. As a precaution, a number of nearby properties have been evacuated.
Police say the cordon has been put in place to ensure public safety and to allow emergency services suitable access while work is ongoing.
At this time, officers have stressed there is not believed to be any wider risk to the public and the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.
It is not yet known how long the cordon will remain in place. Police have said they will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
Residents in the area are advised to follow police guidance and avoid the cordoned area while the investigation continues.
