Emergency services were called to reports of a car fire on the A385 in the early hours of this morning.

A fire appliance from Totnes was mobilised to a report of a road traffic collision where the vehicle was on fire.

Upon arrival crews confirmed that one car had left the highway and was partway down a steep bank well alight.

Crews used one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire whilst also using a lighting unit and thermal imaging camera to assist the Police in locating the driver and possible other occupants of the vehicle.

A search of the area, which also included the Ambulance HART team, continued but no driver or occupants were found.  Crews used a tirfor winch to remove the vehicle that was wedged between trees on the steep bank.
