Torbay Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) will be taking part in a Charity incubator push this Sunday 24 August to raise funds for ‘Kangaroo’ chairs.
Starting in Brixham and ending at Torbay Hospital (See route below) the aim is to raise £6000 for four fully reclining Kangaroo Care chairs.
Kangaroo Care – What’s that?
Kangaroo care is a technique practiced on newborn (often premature) babies, where the baby is held, wearing only a nappy, skin-to-skin on the chest of the parent.
The benefits of Kangaroo care (named for the similarity to how certain marsupials carry their young) include:
-More regular breathing
-Increased oxygen levels
-More rapid weight gain
-Increased periods of sleep
-More successful breast feeding
-Earlier hospital discharge
None of the current chairs in SCBU recline and are either to low or too rigid for the parent to relax whilst enjoying this technique with their child.
£6000 would purchase four of the much needed chairs for the unit.
