Step Inside 185 year old Cofford Farmhouse

Cofton Holidays, the family-run luxury holiday park in Starcross, Devon, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with the grand opening of a brand new holiday accommodation. Cofford Farmhouse is a hidden historical gem that has been part of the landscape since the 19th Century and has been lovingly restored by the Cofton team. Guests staying in the eco-friendly luxury retreat are in for a surprise during their stay where they will co-exist with protected bat species in a unique six-bedroom property that is both charming and historically significant.

Following an extensive and sensitive restoration project spanning two years, the late Georgian grade 2 listed Cofford Farmhouse is now open for public guests for the very first time in its 185-year history. A classic example of a Devon Farmhouse, the property is mentioned on the 1840 Tithe Map, forming part of the land owned at that time by the Earl Of Devon. The Jeffery family, who have lived on the land for 50 years and developed an award-winning holiday business there, are dedicated to preserving its charms both natural and man-made.

The restoration of the previously crumbling Cofford Farmhouse and its outbuildings has been a challenging project, which has juggled the importance of maintaining features of historical interest, the natural habitats that have formed therein, and creating sustainable and viable luxury accommodation to breathe new life and purpose into the buildings.

Chris Jeffery, Director at Cofton Holidays explained one of the challenges of this unique restoration project;

“Following the results of our bat surveys, which identified the presence of pipistrelles and greater horseshoe bats, the attic on the apartments has been converted into a bat roost and there is an entrance on the rear for the bats, so guests are technically co-habiting with the bats!

It became essential to adopt a lighting strategy that minimises disruption to these protected species. Low-level lighting reduces the risk of bats being predated by birds of prey at dawn and dusk and allows them to hunt effectively within their natural habitat. Additionally, we know this approach enhances the experience for guests by creating beautiful ambient lighting and thereby reducing glare, enabling our pupils to remain dilated, which improves nighttime visibility and creates opportunities to appreciate the night sky and its stars.”

The beautifully restored property combines timeless character with modern luxury, creating a truly unique getaway experience. Thoughtfully designed with both comfort and elegance in mind, the dog-friendly Cofford Farmhouse offers a warm and welcoming escape, perfect for large family gatherings, celebrations with friends, or simply taking a break from the hustle and bustle to enjoy some well-earned tranquillity.

Tucked away in the picturesque Cofford Farm, just a short distance from the main holiday park, Cofford Farmhouse offers:

● 6 spacious bedrooms with super king beds (or twin setup on request).
● 5 bathrooms, including a luxurious roll-top bath and en-suites on the top floor.
● A fully equipped family kitchen and dining room seating 12for unforgettable meals together.
● Multiple living areas, from a grand lounge to a cosy snug for movie nights.
● A large, enclosed garden with a hot tub, BBQ, and plenty of seating to soak up the breathtaking countryside views.

Cofford’s outbuildings have also been converted into two charming, dog-friendly apartments, each featuring a private patio and relaxing hot tub. The Hayloft offers breathtaking countryside views, while The Granary is a cosy ground-floor hideaway. Both include a king-size bedroom, twin room, modern shower room, and stylish open-plan living, perfectly combining tranquillity with convenient access to all the facilities of the main Cofton Holiday Park.
