‘Britain’s best-loved wordsmith’, Susie Dent, is coming to the Palace Theatre in Paignton for an afternoon of etymological fun in her brand-new tour sharing the joys and quirks of the English language.
Following on from her hit show ‘The Secret Life of Words’, Susie Dent is on tour again with a brand-new collection of facts and stories from the wonderful world of words. Have you ever wondered whether there’s a word for going to the fridge for the umpteenth time in search of something new? Or puzzled over the reason why a group of crows is called a ‘murder’, while owls form a ‘parliament’? Is teen slang actually designed to make us tear our hair out? And just how many words do we need for being drunk?
Susie has appeared in “Dictionary Corner” on the Channel 4 game show Countdown since 1992. She also appears on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, a post-watershed comedy version of the show.
She has published a number of books about language including Interesting Stories about Curious Words, and What Made the Crocodile Cry? 101 Questions About the English Language. Why do good things cut the mustard? Who or what was the real Real McCoy? And why do we call false sentiment crocodile tears? Can crocodiles really cry? Susie draws on her popular television segment on the curiosities of English to tackle these and many other fascinating puzzles.
In June 2024 Dent was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2024 Birthday Honours for services to literature and to language.
With the help of funny, insightful, and head-scratching examples, Susie will entertain and educate us with her pick of language’s greatest hits. Word Perfect will remind us just how unpredictable, wayward, and utterly magical our mother tongue can be.
Fans of her ever-popular Countdown slot won’t need to miss a moment as the Paignton show is at 2:00pm on Sunday 26th April.
