The 2026 New Year People’s Honours to be presented at the Palace of Westminster

Devon’s Jodie Wilkerson will be among 26 exceptional individuals receiving the prestigious British Citizen Award (BCA) at the Palace of Westminster this month, celebrating outstanding contributions to society.

The Medal Presentation on 22 January will see Malachi receive the coveted BCA Medal of Honour for Services to Education (BCAe).

Jodie is the driving force behind Exmouth Bosom Buddies, a grassroots volunteer-led organisation supporting families through the most vulnerable early years of parenthood.

When local authority funding cuts in 2019 threatened to close the area’s only breastfeeding support group, Jodie didn’t want parents lose such a lifeline, so she stepped in and transformed it into a trusted, volunteer-powered service supporting hundreds of parents and children every year.

Bosom Buddies meets multiple layers of need – practical help through feeding guidance, equipment, and resources for disadvantaged families; emotional support to prevent isolation and post-natal depression; and community cohesion that strengthens family bonds and resilience.

Under her leadership, Bosom Buddies has improved breastfeeding rates, reduced pressure on NHS services, and inspired many parents to return as trained volunteers, continuing the cycle of care.

Jodie helped to relaunch the Devon Real Nappy initiative in Exmouth, and the biggest impact of her initiative is the creation of a free, inclusive and sustainable model of care that parents have each week. In 2024, Bosom Buddies supported nearly 800 parents and their children.

Stephanie Wood, from BCA Partner One Stop said: “This year’s medalists exemplify the incredible support within our communities, especially during challenging times. We’re honoured to partner with the BCA and play a part in recognising these exceptional individuals.”

The presentation, hosted by TV and Radio presenter Konnie Huq, will be attended by BCA Patrons Dame Mary Perkins, co-founder of Specsavers, and The Lord Mott OBE. Representatives from BCA supporters, Specsavers, Places for People, Novus Property Solutions and Aldermore Bank will also be in attendance. Following the ceremony, medalists will enjoy an open-top bus tour to take in some of Westminster’s iconic sights in celebration of their achievements.
