Tor Bridge High School secures major investment to replace and upgrade 3G football pitch

Tor Bridge High School is pleased to announce that it has secured £278,014 to help replace and upgrade its 3G pitch with a brand-new FIFA Quality 3G football pitch, made possible through a significant investment from the Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation, alongside developer contributions from Plymouth City Council.

3G pitches are high-quality all-weather surfaces that are perfect for learning and enjoying the game.

The new facility represents a major investment in grassroots sport and physical activity across Plymouth, creating a high-quality, accessible space for students, local clubs and the wider community to enjoy all year round.

Designed to support football development locally, the facility will also help address growing demand for quality playing surfaces in the city, ensuring more people have access to places to play.

The new facility includes:

  • A full-size FIFA Quality 3G football pitch
  • High-performance floodlighting
  • New goals and equipment storage facilities
  • Improved access and spectator areas

Tor Bridge High School, part of the Ted Wragg Trust, is committed to promoting physical education, health and wellbeing for all students. The school’s PE curriculum is designed to support young people physically, mentally and emotionally, helping them develop resilience, teamwork, leadership and confidence through sport.

The new 3G pitch will further enhance both curriculum and extracurricular opportunities, enabling more students to participate in competitive sport and develop leadership skills.

Tracy Stephenson, Headteacher at Tor Bridge High, said:

“We are incredibly proud to see this exciting project come to life. The new 3G pitch will be a fantastic asset not only for our students but for our wider community. It will create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to participate in sport, improve their health and wellbeing, and be part of a thriving local sporting environment.”

Councillor Kate Taylor, Cabinet member responsible for sport and leisure at Plymouth City Council said:

“We’re really pleased to be supporting these much-needed pitch improvements, which will benefit the whole school community as well as residents right across the city.

“I am particularly happy to see investment in playing spaces in the north of the city, as we continue our commitment to Plymouth having as many quality pitches as possible.

“Investing in facilities like this helps to increase participation in physical activity and means more people can enjoy sport in a high-quality environment.”

Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said:

“The Football Foundation is working closely with our partners – the Premier League, The FA and Government – to transform the quality of grassroots facilities in England by delivering projects like this across the country.

“Good quality playing facilities have a transformative impact on physical and mental health and play an important role in bringing people together and strengthening local communities.

“This grant award to Tor Bridge High School towards developing a new 3G pitch is fantastic news for the local community and will help give more people access to a great place to play.”
