Torbay Heritage Grants to bring nine local projects to life

Local groups, organisations and charities are being invited to apply for funding to celebrate Torbay’s rich artistic, literary and musical heritage.

Torbay Council has reopened its Local Heritage Grant Scheme for a second round of applications following the success of the first round earlier this year, when nine heritage projects received funding.

The scheme, themed ‘Writers, Artists and Musicians on the English Riviera’, aims to support community-led projects exploring Torbay’s connections with writers, artists and musicians and help more people discover the stories behind the Bay’s heritage.

Just under £250,000 has been awarded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to enable Torbay Council to deliver the initiative.

Grants of up to £7,000 available

Grants of up to £5,000 are available for activities, while capital projects can apply for grants of up to £7,000.

Capital projects could include signage or physical improvements to spaces.

Groups are being encouraged to come up with creative ways of engaging local residents and celebrating the people who have helped shape Torbay’s cultural history.

Potential projects could include heritage walking trails, digital enhancements at existing heritage sites, commemorative installations and events.

Free advice sessions across Torbay

Torbay Council’s Local Heritage Grant Support Officer will be holding a series of free face-to-face and online sessions to help potential applicants with their ideas and answer questions about the scheme.

In-person sessions will be held at:

  • Torquay Library – Tuesday 29 September, 10am to 1pm
  • Brixham Library – Wednesday 30 September, 10am to 12.30pm
  • Paignton Library – Thursday 1 October, midday to 5pm

Online support sessions will also take place on:

  • Tuesday 6 October, 11am to 1pm
  • Wednesday 7 October, 6.30pm to 8pm
  • Thursday 8 October, midday to 2pm

Details of how to join the online sessions can be found on the Torbay Council website.

Anyone unable to attend a session can also contact the team by email at heritage.grants@torbay.gov.uk.

‘Bring their ideas to life’

Councillor Jackie Thomas, Torbay Council’s Cabinet Member for Tourism, Culture and Events, and Corporate Services, said: “I’m delighted that Torbay’s Local Heritage Grant Scheme is opening again, giving even more local groups the opportunity to bring their ideas to life.

“The first round of applications showed just how much creativity and enthusiasm there is in our communities for celebrating Torbay’s unique heritage.

“We’re excited to see what ideas come forward this time and how they can help more people discover the stories of the artists, writers and musicians who have been inspired by the English Riviera.”

The Torbay Local Heritage Grant Scheme has been made possible through investment from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Wednesday 11 November.

Full details, including eligibility criteria and information on how to apply, are available on the Torbay Council Local Heritage Grant Scheme webpage.
