Torbay is shining a spotlight on support for autistic people as World Autism Awareness Day takes place on Thursday 2 April.
Led by the United Nations since 2007, this year’s theme — “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value” — highlights the importance of recognising the dignity, inclusion and contribution of autistic people in society.
Torbay Council is using the occasion to remind residents of the wide range of support available locally, alongside recent progress made to improve services.
A growing commitment in Torbay
Over the past 18 months, Torbay Council has worked closely with the Torbay Autism Partnership Board, Autism Ambassadors and the wider community to develop the Torbay Adults Autism Strategy, which was officially adopted in December 2025.
Council Leader David Thomas praised the work being done:
“We are proud to support autistic people here in Torbay. The passion and commitment from the Autism Partnership Board and our community is helping drive meaningful change.”
Work is already underway on a new Action Plan, co-produced with Autism Ambassadors, which is expected to be finalised by summer 2026.
Raising awareness and understanding
A key focus for the year ahead is improving awareness and understanding of autism across Torbay — described as a “golden thread” running through the new strategy.
Autism Ambassadors have also created a practical guide outlining the support available for autistic adults, making it easier for people to find the help they need.
What support is available?
There are a number of resources and services available locally, including:
Torbay Leisure Card – Offers discounted access to a range of sports and activities for autistic people who hold an autism alert card
