Oxford United 1 – 0 Torquay United
Chris Hargreaves has suffered his first defeat as Manager of Torquay United after The Gulls went down 1-0 to Oxford United.
Oxford’s Deane Smalley scored the only goal just six minutes into the match, in what was a generally scrappy affair, with both teams attempting to use prior results as motivational tools.
This was Hargreaves’ second match in charge, having won the first in an impressive manner 2-0 against Wimbledon. But the elements did not favour United, postponing last week’s crucial game against fellow strugglers Northampton just as momentum was on their side.
As a result, The Gulls had gone two weeks without a match, and the unwelcome break was evident, with United slow out of the blocks and quickly on the defensive.
Oxford, for their part, were looking to bounce back from a humiliating 3-0 home defeat against Charlton in the FA Cup, and threw everything at Torquay from the get-go. The Gulls eventually settled and began match Oxford for pressure, but it resulted in little more than the teams butting heads, with 26 fouls overall and over 9 minutes of injury time.
The defeat leaves Torquay second from bottom in League Two, two points adrift of nearest rivals Bury, who have played a match fewer. Their match against Accrington Stanley, another team trapped in the relegation whirlpool, was postponed.
