The observation wheel on Torquay seafront will not return for the 2026 season after operators The Mellors Group confirmed they have decided not to bring the attraction back to the Bay this year.
The popular wheel has become a familiar part of the waterfront in recent years, drawing residents and visitors alike with panoramic views across Torbay. However, despite ongoing discussions between the company and Torbay Council, an agreement could not be reached to secure its return.
Torbay Council said officers had worked closely with The Mellors Group to explore a range of operational and financial options in an effort to keep the attraction in Torquay. Following what the council described as “much discussion”, the company ultimately made the decision not to return for 2026.
Councillor Jackie Thomas, Torbay Council’s Cabinet Member for Tourism, Culture and Events, said the decision would come as disappointing news for many people across the Bay.
She said: “We are very disappointed by The Mellors Group’s decision not to return to Torquay this year. The wheel has become a much-loved attraction on the seafront, and we know many residents and visitors will miss seeing it.
“We worked closely with the company exploring practical options to find a solution that would work for them, but despite our best efforts they have decided not to return this year. We will continue to work with Mellors to support their return.”
Despite the loss of the seafront attraction, the council says Torbay’s tourism offer remains strong, with a packed programme of events planned throughout 2026 aimed at attracting visitors year-round.
Cllr Thomas added that the authority remains committed to strengthening Torbay’s position as one of the UK’s leading coastal destinations.
Among the major events confirmed for the coming months are the English Riviera Airshow from 29 to 31 May, Torbay Pride on 13 June, the English Riviera Walking Festival in June, and the International Agatha Christie Festival in September.
Other highlights include Offshore and Bays Festival, England’s Seafood Feast, and the return of Bay of Lights later in the year.
The council says the 2026 programme is one of the strongest event line-ups Torbay has hosted, with further announcements expected in the coming months.
A full list of upcoming events across Torbay is available via the council’s tourism and events website.
