Utility works on A383 delayed as route diverted to Chercombe Valley Road

Essential utility work originally scheduled to begin on the A383 in Newton Abbot next week has now been rescheduled and rerouted following discussions between Devon County Council and developer Bloor Homes.

The initial phase of work to install utility services for the new Houghton Barton housing development will now take place along Chercombe Valley Road, starting today (Monday, 3 November).

Temporary traffic lights will be in place on Chercombe Valley Road for approximately nine weeks while the work is carried out. This change means the A383 Ashburton Road will remain open and unaffected during the busy run-up to Christmas, helping to ease congestion during the festive shopping period.

Under the revised plan, Bloor Homes will begin the next stage of utility installation on the A383 from February 2026, with the work expected to last around 30 weeks. That represents a significant reduction from the original 50-week programme previously proposed, thanks to a series of mitigation measures agreed with the council.

Planning permission has been granted for 1,100 new homes at Houghton Barton — a key strategic site in the local plan. Utility connections along Ashburton Road are essential to support the development, and any delay could impact local housing delivery targets set by the government.

Residents are advised to allow extra time for journeys in and around Chercombe Valley Road over the coming weeks while the temporary lights are in operation.
