Paignton’s Victoria Street will remain closed to vehicles for at least the next six weeks after emergency works were carried out in a building deemed structurally unsafe.
Torbay Council has confirmed that urgent action was taken at the privately owned property at 62–70 Victoria Street after serious structural issues were identified.
Council engineers have removed the most dangerous sections of the building in an effort to reduce the immediate risk to public safety. However, officials say the structure remains unstable and the road closure must stay in place on safety grounds.
The closure affects vehicle access along Victoria Street and is expected to continue for a minimum of six weeks while further assessments are carried out.
Despite the disruption, pedestrian access is being maintained to local businesses, Paignton railway station and the town library. Businesses within the affected area remain open and accessible to customers.
Torbay Council says it is continuing to work with partner organisations to explore whether any safe alternative bus routes can be introduced while the closure remains in force.
A spokesperson said the situation is continuing to develop and that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
