In Exmouth, a German WW2 bomb was dredged from the water near Exmouth Marina on Wednesday 14 January, leading to the establishment of a 400-metre safety cordon.

According to East Devon District Council, the evacuation zone covers around 2,000 properties, affecting an estimated 5,000 residents. Homes, schools, hotels and businesses within the area were evacuated, and many residents were unable to return home overnight.

Displaced residents have since been warned that they may need to remain away from their homes for a second night while experts assess the safest way to deal with the device. Police have asked the public to avoid the Exmouth Marina area until further notice.

Plymouth Building Site Discovery

Meanwhile in Plymouth, a 50kg German SC50 bomb was discovered at a building site on Martin Street in the Millbay area, also on 14 January.

Risk management specialists have confirmed the device as a German WW2 bomb, and a 100-metre cordon remains in place around the site. Residents and nearby premises have been evacuated, and Millbay Road is being avoided as bomb disposal teams continue their work.

Ongoing Response

Specialist bomb disposal squads are assisting at both locations, and experts are meeting to discuss the safest methods to neutralise the devices. Police and councils are working together to keep residents informed as the situation develops.

Members of the public are urged to:

-Avoid the affected areas in Exmouth Marina and Millbay, Plymouth

-Follow instructions from emergency services

-Check local council and police updates for the latest information

-This story will be updated as more details become available.
