Totnes Rotary Club have recently shown their support to local learning disabled children and young adults by making a £500 donation to Robins Respite and Lifeskills Centre in Dartington.
Robins, which is a part of local charity, Lifeworks, are raising funds to update their sensory room. The respite and residential centre has six respite (short-break) beds and four residential beds – offering care to local learning disabled children between the ages of 4 and 19 years old – and much needed support to their families.
Laura Bambrey, Community Fundraiser & Communications Officer at Lifeworks, who received the cheque during a presentation at the club meeting at the Royal Seven Stars, Totnes on the 25th of April, said “We are so grateful to the Totnes Rotary Club for this generous donation, which will be used to purchase a piece of specialist fiber-optic sensory equipment, as well as contribute to the overall re-decoration of the room.”
Devon County Councillor Rosemary Rowe has also donated a £350 Locality Grant to the project, meaning that the charity are now looking to raise the remaining £1050 required so that work can start as soon as possible.
Laura Bambrey continued, “We have now set up an online campaign page where members of the public can support this appeal, should they wish. I’m always blown away by the generosity of our local community – the support individuals, groups and businesses show our young people is overwhelming – and so very important to us.”
Multi sensory rooms are very important for exploring and developing the young people’s communication skills. They have been shown to enhance sensory development (hearing, sight, taste, smell and touch), increase hand/eye coordination, promote language development and encourage relaxation.
