Torbay Council’s Public Health Team is raising awareness around the use of psychoactive substances, previously known as legal highs.
In May this year it became illegal to supply, sell, import or export psychoactive substances. However, they continue to be available on the black market or online.
Deputy Mayor and Executive Lead for Health and Wellbeing and Corporate Services, Councillor Derek Mills, said: “The perception is that, because psychoactive substances were formerly known as legal highs, they are less harmful than other illegal drugs, but this is definitely not the case.
“It’s impossible to know what chemicals they actually contain so taking them is risky, and particularly when combined with alcohol and other drugs or if the person has a health condition.”
“Our key message is that no one should take psychoactive substances because of the unknown ingredients and the health risks they pose. However, if you or a friend make the decision to take them, you should ring 999 immediately if you or your friend have any health concerns as a result of using them.”
