A local initiative to help the elderly has won a £2,500 worth of funding to provide much-needed comfort and warmth this Christmas following an announcement made yesterday by the Aviva Broker Awards.
Paignton based Age UK Torbay is an independent charity that provides a range of care and support services to older people across Torbay, enabling them to live in their homes longer and make later life a more fulfilling experience.
Local business Riviera Insurance gave the award nomination to help Age UK Torbay fund their ‘Winter Warmer Boxes’ – an initiative to help tackle the concerns of rising energy costs amongst older people of Torbay by providing boxes of essentials to help out. Age UK Torbay will distribute the packages in January to help raise the spirits of Torbay’s most vulnerable and give some warmth and comfort to residents with fluffy socks, hot water bottles, hand warmers and more.
Age UK Torbay competed with over 100 other causes in a nationwide initiative to encourage local insurance brokers to champion projects in their area with a chance of receiving funding from £500 to £20,000.
The team at Riviera Insurance has a history of working closely with the community of Torbay, so the team jumped at the opportunity to help when asked.
In previous years Riviera has assisted Age UK Torbay by raising funding for the Christmas Gift hampers appeal during the pandemic.
Helen Harman from Age UK Torbay says ‘This will be much welcome support for our older people who are concerned about what the next few months might bring, especially with energy costs soaring. This will assist some of our most needy clients, in particular those who live in unsuitable housing, or who are struggling with money. We have worked closely with Riviera Insurance on a number of projects over the last few years, and we would like to thank them for the nomination and support’.
The brokerage nominated six local causes for awards and successfully secured two additional £500 awards to additional community organisations, Tissues and Issues, and the Lupton House Trust.
Faye Roebuck from Riviera Insurance says ‘We are so excited to have helped these three local causes that are all making a difference in the Torbay community- especially at Christmas. ‘So many smaller charities have struggled through the pandemic – the additional funds are needed now more than ever, and it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of these awards and give something back to the community.’
