Rain didn’t dampen spirits for the unveiling of Torbay Civic societies latest historic blue plaque by Torbay’s Mayor, Mark Spacagna along with over forty local invited guests on Thursday the 19th October.
America Lodge, in the Lincombes has a rich history but is probably best known for being Torbays main RNIB rehabilitation centre.
The name derives from when the property was purchased on behalf of the War relief society of America in 1941 to be used for the benefit of civilians blinded in the Second World War.
It became one of the first “Queen Elizabeth Homes of Recovery” which later became the Royal National Institute for the blind. The RNIB closed the property in 2001 When it reverted back to a private house.
The current homeowner Mr Alex James said “ It is amazing to discover the fascinating history here and being presented with the blue plaque will serve as a permanent reminder to the part my home played in doing such good work for so many people”.
