A rare chance to get up close and personal with some of the country’s finest bonsai trees will be on offer at Churston’s historic Lupton House.
Bonsai in the Park is set to take place at the Grade II listed home just outside Brixham, showing many eye-catching trees never exhibited in South Devon before.
The event is organised by South Devon Bonsai Society, with other societies from as far away as Wales and Somersetattending the show to present their best trees.
South Devon boasts some highly accomplished bonsai artists, with two members having won awards at competitions in Britain and across Europe.
Award-winning society member Peter Evans, who organised the show, said: “We’re very proud to be hosting this prestigious event at such an historic site as Lupton House.
“Bonsai in the Park is an opportunity for members of the public to see a collection of truly stunning trees, some of which will be travelling hundreds of miles to be in Torbay.
“As well as the eye-catching trees on show, there will be trees to buy, pots for sale by some incredibly talented potters, and live demonstrations of different aspects of the bonsai artform.”
Bonsai is a centuries-old craft that can be traced back to ancient China. The process of growing bonsai involves shaping and pruning the tree into a specific form and size.
The trees can live for hundreds of years, with some beingmore than 1,000 years old. Recently, one tree now in America was discovered to have survived the atomic bomb that decimated Hiroshima in 1945.
Peter added: “While we won’t have trees that are hundreds of years old at Bonsai in the Park, there will be many that are decades old.
“To create these trees requires dedication and patience, and members of Lupton House Trust have shown the same dedication and patience in restoring the beautiful building so that members of the public can enjoy it.
“This makes Lupton House the perfect location for us to haveBonsai in the Park, and we look forward to seeing many people at our show, where they will be able to enjoy some amazing trees in an historic setting.
“All entrance fees for Bonsai in the Park will go to the Trust so that their members can continue their task of restoring and maintaining the house and gardens.”
Bonsai in the Park is on Sunday 15 September, 10am-4pm. There will be refreshments available all day and free parking. Entrance is £5 for adults, and children can enter for free.
