Essential highway safety works will shortly commence on the A3022 Brixham Road to the east (Paignton side) of Churston Mill Farm, extending for approximately 120m towards the area locally known as Strawberry Bends.
These works which will see the damaged crash barrier replaced and repairs undertaken to the supporting wall. Work will begin at 0930 on Monday 19 February 2018.
Councillor Robert Excell, Executive Lead for Community Services, said: “Unfortunately the works will inevitably introduce some inconvenience for users of the main A3022 Brixham Road, which we trust will be understood.
“Works will commence with 24hr signal controlled traffic management, which are expected to last approximately two weeks. Peak traffic times will be monitored for adjustment of signal timings to suit traffic flows.”
“At completion of the deep excavations, further works of between one to two weeks will be protected by signalised traffic management at off-peak day times only, while morning and afternoon peak times and evenings will return to normal two-way traffic flow.
“This method of working has been agreed between the contractor and the highways network team as the best way to expedite these works.”
Due to the age of the existing barriers a ‘like for like’ replacement is not possible and further works will be required to allow implementation of a Vehicle Restraint System, which meets the current specification.
The works include around 50m of deep excavations, which will be undertaken adjacent to the highway boundary wall. This will allow strengthening of the existing retaining wall, providing an anchorage point to which the new vehicle restraint system will be secured – protecting the public highway for years to come.
Safety on the highway is of paramount importance. The depth of excavations require the imposition of loading restrictions from passing vehicles, this is done maintaining a safe distance of separation between the contractors workforce and passing traffic.
