Businesses are being urged to get behind the Baton of Hope that comes to Torbay later this year.
The Baton of Hope is a suicide prevention initiative travelling around the country, with Torbay being the only port of call in the South West, on Tuesday, September 30.
Sadly, an average of 20 people per year, 75% of them men, die by suicide in Torbay, which is higher than the national average and each one has a direct effect on an estimated 2700 people.
Already, more than 100 local people whose lives have been touched by suicide have volunteered to carry the Baton of Hope (think Olympic torch without the flame) as it makes its way through Torquay, Paignton and Brixham before returning to Torquay aboard the RNLI Torbay lifeboat.
A spokesperson for the organisers said: “Our aim, in the lead up to and throughout the day is to promote better mental health across The Bay, raise awareness of the impact of suicide and spread a message of hope, with a focus on establishing a legacy for future generations.
“To help us spread the word, we are organising a series of events across the Bay, including a grand finale gala show at the Riviera Centre in Torquay.
“We are seeking sponsorship from companies who would like to make a positive impact on our area. This is a great opportunity to promote your social responsibility as an organisation. In return, we can offer advertising space on the live tour screen at the event village, social media and traditional media promotion, and advertising space on T-shirts. “
